What I enjoyed about this story is that it is different to other chick lits I have read. There are no cupcakes, designer bags although there are a few expensive black hats or bitchy friends. Don't get me wrong, I love a cupcake and allowing my imagination to picture glamorous outfits and a bit of girly chat, but what I loved about this book is that it moves away from that and focuses on family and their dysfunctional relationships. This is the first book I've read written by Madeleine, rather than her pen name Sophie, and my first opinion is that the two styles are different. Madeleine's style in 'The Gatecrasher' was gritty, as this book tackles issues of deceit, fraud, abuse, friendship and love.
The Gatecrasher by Madeleine Wickham: a warm-hearted and uplifting read
A collective of bibliophiles talking about books. Book Fox vulpes libris : small bibliovorous mammal of overactive imagination and uncommonly large bookshop expenses. Habitat: anywhere the rustle of pages can be heard. Fleur Daxeny is beautiful, unscrupulous, and has a large wardrobe of black designer suits.
The Secret Is Out! Madeleine Wickham is Sophie Kinsella, and The Gatecrasher is just as delicious as her internationally bestselling Shopaholic series. Everything's coming up roses for Fleur Daxeny, as she goes through more rich men than she does designer hats. Beautiful and utterly irresistible, her success at crashing funerals to find wealthy men is remarkable. Fleur wastes no time in seducing her latest conquest, the handsome and rich widower Richard Favour. His children are caught up in a whirlwind as their father's new girlfriend descends on the family estate. Fleur is not one to wear her heart on her Chanel sleeves, but she soon finds herself embracing Richard and his family.
