Set in s Barcelona, this is a fast-paced mystery narrated by a streetwise 'lunatic' who is released from an asylum in order to aid the police in locating a missing girl.

The narrator is witty, charming, and clever, as well as a typical male chauvinist. He's also the glue holding this rather mundane mystery tale together.

Unfortunately it's unclear if Mendoza simply wants to tell us an entertaining story or if he wants to critique post-Franco Spanish society. The novel is just not long and su Set in s Barcelona, this is a fast-paced mystery narrated by a streetwise 'lunatic' who is released from an asylum in order to aid the police in locating a missing girl.

The novel is just not long and substantial enough to facilitate both, regardless of whether he is on point or not with his jabs at classism and other social ills. There are definitely some amusing moments, but the mystery itself fails to deliver on its promise.

Still, it was a nice distraction from more involved reading. This book was such an awesome read. Not only is the narrator of the story really funny, but the takes you on an awesome adventure. This is one of the best detective stories ever. Picture a crazy Sherlock Holmes that just came out of an institution and is forced to investigate a crime The other amazing thing about this book is that its so descriptive and its easy to follow.

It's really one of those books that you can definitely picture as a movie. It has all the elemen This book was such an awesome read. It has all the elements that are needed; great suspense, an amazing protagonist, and a very funny plot. I highly recommend this book.

It's a very quick read and you will want to finish the book in one sitting. The ultimate anti-hero Gonewiththewind is released from a psychiatric institute to assist the Barcelona police in their search for a teenage girl gone missing. Without money or place to stay, he only has his imagination, his wit and his survival instinct to rely on. The plot may not be as well-wrought as one would expect from a detective story, but the wonderful cast of characters, the vivid depictions of Barcelona's lesser neighbourhoods and the hilarious situations Gonewiththewind finds himself The ultimate anti-hero Gonewiththewind is released from a psychiatric institute to assist the Barcelona police in their search for a teenage girl gone missing.

The plot may not be as well-wrought as one would expect from a detective story, but the wonderful cast of characters, the vivid depictions of Barcelona's lesser neighbourhoods and the hilarious situations Gonewiththewind finds himself in more than make up for this shortcoming. Mendoza's accessible style makes for light reading.

This may not be Nobel Prize material, but it's very, very entertaining. Dec 27, Jose rated it it was ok Shelves: read Meh, between 2 and 3 stars. Quick read, but the Spanish slang and way of speaking of the main character was a bit of a nuisance.

My first Mendoza book, as well. Interesting background, focusing on the transition years. But the plot itself Jan 08, Doron Yam rated it really liked it Shelves: modern-classics , detective.

The book is writen with lots of humor and tact. The hero is a psychopath that gets a one in a life-time offer from the police to regain his freedom. He need to solve a mistery in a girl school with no authority and no help - only his own wisdom and sences.

The result is funny detective story in which the reader wants to keep on reading. Somehow' I guessed the end but I dont think it is that obvious. It is certainly a book worth reading. If you want to understand Catalan humours Intriguing mystery story by a noted contemporary Spanish writer, which I read about 7 years ago.

Don't remember the details of the plot, but do remember enjoying the read. Still worth a read, especially if you love Barcelona. May 30, Mocoma rated it liked it. Not too bad but not too good. People in this book talk in a very very weird way. I read this because I loved another of this author's books, An Englishman in Madrid. Sadly, for me, this one wasn't nearly as good.

It's about a convict, who is released from prison to try to solve the mystery of why girls are disappearing from a boarding school A playful, if somewhat scatological, good-natured parody of the private eye genre.

Part of the surreal quality arises from the nature of the narrator, who is a madman released from the asylum so that his unique sleuthing abilities can solve a crime. Published by the very interesting Telegram imprint, who are doing good work in bringing European and other literature to light.

A very good romp, but ultimately not much more than a beach read. I don't think Mendoza takes himself too seriously, and I really like his sense of humor. In my view, blurbs that claim this book contains deep political satire do it a disservice. Actually I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't come to it with inflated expectations about its sub-text. Having read some of the reviews, I couldn't help noticing that some people actually referred to Mendoza's style and boldly used cute neologisms, such as 'absurdal', or illogical repetitions, such as 'but'.

Oh, but wait, his style aside, Mendoza probably knows how to use a language properly. A respected detective has amazing logic and is an amateur of drinks. The hero treats his delinquent inclinations in a hospice as he is dependent of Pepsi-Cola. However, the book seemed more catchy and interesting in the reviews, so not what I was hoping for.

Apr 26, Richard Mccaffery rated it really liked it. I thought this was a really good and entertaining read. Moments in the book had me laughing embarrassingly in public, the story itself wasn't exactly Sherlock Holmes but the protagonist makes for a really fun read.

Jul 21, M. Jan 04, Elenaqb rated it really liked it. Hilarious and imaginative. Definitely a tongue in cheek read! Very enjoyable Apr 23, K. Taylor rated it really liked it.
