Interesting read, the kind that makes you shake your head in agreement or disagreement while reading it.
A must-read for anyone interested in Brazilian history. The normal criticism of Freyre: he makes out slavery in Brazil to have been much more congenial than it was. But at least he champions their vital contributions to Brazilian society. A vida. Dessa forma, acho importante que o leitor encare a obra com um certo filtro.
Mas vale a pena a leitura. Recommended to Czarny by: Eugene Genovese who had the misguided notion that it supported his crackpot Marxist interpretation of slavery. Shelves: lat-amer-hist. Mastes and Slaves is a dazzling literary work of the greatness of Brazil's multi-racial culture disguised as an anthropological thesis on the formation of Brazilian society the miscegenous promiscuity of Brazil's plantations.
Masters and Slaves provides armchair tourism at its very best with its incomparable descriptions of the live on the large estates and the Portuguese, African blacks and Brazilian indians who lived and merged into one new race on them. Its optimism about the mixing of races i Mastes and Slaves is a dazzling literary work of the greatness of Brazil's multi-racial culture disguised as an anthropological thesis on the formation of Brazilian society the miscegenous promiscuity of Brazil's plantations.

It's very important to choose a good translator or, if it's possible, read Freyre in portuguese , because Gilberto Freyre's style is perhaps the finest literary work that ever came from Portuguese language.
Terrifically interesting. The vocabulary of words for plantation life is as exhaustive as you will find. The explanation of the social hierarchy and motivational impulses within it I found truly fascinating.
But it's societal influence, despite these defects, could not be understated in the development of the modern Brazilian psyche. Moving forward the Terrifically interesting. Moving forward the influence of this books will likely diminish, but it will remain a foundational piece of the present and the past. Esperava algo totalmente diferente do livro.
