The Fears and Anxieties of Memory in the Digital Era
Students will discuss selected concepts related to postmodern postindustrial societies that have emerged over recent years. The classes will aim to answer the question of whether sociological theories speaking of a radical change in Western societies from the midth century are valid. Topics covered include: concepts explaining the specificity of living in cities, the crisis of authority and the concurrent increased trust in democracy, changes in the social roles of women and men and visions of close relationships, the impact of media on perception of reality, Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the dominating class and distinction, and two opposing processes: progressing individualization and popularization. The pretext to begin a critical discussion on the above concepts will be their usefulness for describing the Polish specificity.
