How to go from http to https – step by step instructions. post thumbnail image

In the article “ Do I need an ssl certificate for an online store ?” We said that GOOGLE ranks secure sites with SSL above the rest. In addition, from 2017, GOOGLE will default mark sites without https as unsafe. This means that users who visit your site will see the corresponding notification. There is little chance that users will linger on this site. But in this article we will not talk about what threatens the lack of SSL. We briefly describe the plan of what needs to be done and in what sequence.

1. Purchasing a certificate

To translate a site from http to https, you must first purchase a certificate. If your website is not an online store or a service for receiving payments, you can use Comodo’s PositiveSSL certificate from Comodo. It has a reasonable price and it performs the basic function of SSL for five plus. If you need a certificate that supports subdomains / many domains and subdomains, or readable by rare versions of browsers, then you should choose a more advanced version of the certificate. A list of all the certificates we provide you can find on the page:  SSL certificates for the site .

2. Install Certificate

Next you need to install the SSL certificate on a hosting or VDS / VPS server. On our website there are instructions for installing the certificate.

3. Configure internal links

<script src="http://example.com/jquery.js"></script>

<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://hoster.example.com/hoster.ru.css"/>

replaced by:

<script src="//example.com/jquery.js"></script>

<link rel="stylesheet" href="//hoster.example.com/hoster.ru.css"/>

4. Configure robots.txt and sitemap.xml

In robots.txt you need to replace two directives. This is the “host” and “Sitemap”.
In “host” you need to register https://hoster.ru/ (instead of hoster.ru indicate the address of your site)
In “Sitemap” https://hoster.ru/sitemap.xml

5. Forwarding example.com

First, on all pages you need to install the tag:

 <link rel="canonical" href="https://…"/>

In this tag, the link must be specified not relative, but absolute. That is, with https: // …

You can read about the tag  here.
You also need to redirect to https: //. Read more about this in our  article.

6. Gluing

Next, you need to add our website again to Yandex.Webmaster and Google.Webmaster and set the site https: // as the main mirror. After the done actions, you will only have to wait for the search engines to replace http with https and transfer all pages of the site.

At this site transfer from http to https ends. Now your site is protected. If you have questions about installing and configuring SSL on your server, please contact our technical support. We will help you.
